How to choose the best nappy for overnight protection

A complete overnight nappy guide backed by Huggies experts.

Why would my baby need overnight nappies?

Babies wake overnight for many reasons – when transitioning between sleep cycles, hunger, teething or simply for soothing. It’s not uncommon for babies to also wake overnight with a wet or dirty nappy, especially when their nappy is full and at capacity.

Fortunately, the chances of waking overnight for a nappy change can be reduced by using nappies that are designed with superior absorption, leakage protection and comfort in mind.

Whilst Huggies nappies offer up to 12 hours of overnight protection, Huggies has developed a special range of nappies and nappy pants that offer Huggies' most advanced overnight protection.

What is the benefit of an overnight nappy for my baby?

Nappies designed specifically for nighttime use have enhanced absorbency features. Using these can lead to fewer overnight wakings and less chance of leaks. That means a better night's sleep for your baby—and for you!

What do nighttime nappies do that day time nappies don’t?"

All Huggies nappies are excellent for overnight leakage protection. However, Huggies Little Sleepers overnight nappies have additional benefits for babies who produce a lot of wee or may may sleep in funny positions where the nappy needs to stay in place and where greater absorbency is needed.

Day and night nappies may look the same, but the differences are all in the details.

  • Huggies Little Sleepers Overnight Nappies feature Huggies' most advanced overnight protection.
  • They include an ultra-absorbent layer for superior overnight dryness.
  • Feature the 3-in-1 SleepDry™ Technology.
  • Designed to help keep your baby dry and leak-free in any sleeping position.
  • Cloudsoft waistband helps trap mess in any sleeping position.
  • Soft and secure leg cuffs help contain leaks.
  • Available as both nappies and nappy pants.
  • Huggies Little Sleepers Nappy Pants feature an easy pull-up, easy on/easy off design for quick overnight changes, making it easier for everyone to get back to sleep.

Should I wake my baby to change their nappy overnight?

Generally, there’s no need to wake a sleeping baby to change their nappy if it’s only wet. However, if they have nappy rash or any skin irritation, it’s worth changing them overnight. Just try to do this quietly and with minimal fuss so they don’t wake up.

Why do babies wee so much overnight?

Young children don’t develop the skills needed to wake overnight to use the toilet until they are well into the early preschool years. Waking with a full bladder and then holding on until they reach the toilet are skills that depend on nervous system development. Boys, in particular, tend to take longer than girls to mature and consistently wake up dry. It also helps to remember that overnight nappies are often noticeably heavier because parents generally do fewer nappy changes during the night.

A baby’s output is a sign of their intake. Babies who have a lot of overnight feeds usually need more frequent nappy changes to stay comfortable. Huggies Little Sleepers Overnight nappies have higher absorbency to provide extra peace of mind.

According to Jane Barry, Midwife and Child Health Nurse, “It’s not until at least 2 to 3 years of age that children develop night-time dryness. Until then, nighttime nappies or nappy pants can help to prevent frequent waking due to wetness.”

What are the signs a baby needs overnight nappies?

It’s not always clear when overnight nappies are needed. However, there are a few common signs to look for:

  • Leaking onto clothing and cot sheets.
  • Your baby starts waking overnight and needs changing. They may not want to feed or need reassurance, but settle quickly after a nappy change.
  • The nappy feels like it has reached capacity and leakage occurs. This may indicate the need for a nappy with higher absorbency.
  • Consider your garbage disposal options as well. Fewer nappies to dispose of can be helpful when camping or travelling away from home. Choosing more absorbent nappies for both daytime and overnight use can be a practical solution.

My baby is a heavy wetter – what should I do?

Some babies seem to produce large volumes of wee which standard nappies struggle to contain. Wetting is linked with nervous system maturity as well as bladder capacity. The older the baby, the more wee they can hold in their bladder and the greater volume of wee they pass at one time.

Nappies do have a threshold for the amount of wee they can hold. Choosing nappies that are designed to absorb a greater volume of wee will help your baby feel more comfortable.

There’s nothing you can do about your baby’s bladder capacity. However, by using overnight nappies their output will be better managed. Some babies are very sensitive to a wet nappy, even if it only seems damp, and will only settle once they’re changed.

Choosing night time nappies - FAQs

It’s fine to still use your choice of baby’s daytime nappy at night until it doesn’t seem to be working anymore. One option before transitioning to night nappies is to size up and see if this absorbs the leaks.

Yes, you’ll find that using a good quality night time nappy will support your baby’s comfort. Although the initial cost may be a factor, the overall advantages will soon become clear when using night time nappies. Keep night nappies separate to the day time ones. Doing this will make the most of the design features.

Check your baby’s nappy when they wake overnight. Huggies Little Sleepers Nappies have a wetness indicator to let you know when it’s time to change. Feel how dense and compacted the nappy is in the centre portion. If it feels damp or only slightly wet, it’s fine to keep on until the baby next wakes. They will need changing each time they do a poo so it’s not left in contact with their skin.

Make sure your boy’s penis is pointed down into the nappy, rather than up when you’re changing him. As you close the tabs, have another check to see it’s pointed down.
